    Absorption or Residential: Two Different Machines

    Before anything else can be diagnosed, it matters which kind of refrigerator is in the coach, because they fail in completely different ways and share almost no parts.

    An absorption refrigerator has no compressor and almost no moving parts. It works by heating an ammonia and water solution, either with a propane burner or an electric element, and letting the resulting cycle of evaporation and absorption carry heat out of the cabinet. That is why it can run all day on gas without any power at all, and it is why it is the traditional choice in a motorhome. It is also why it is fussy: it needs the coach reasonably level, it needs good airflow up the back of the cabinet, and it loses capacity sharply as the surrounding temperature rises.

    A residential refrigerator is essentially the unit from a house: a sealed compressor system running on 120 volt power. It cools harder, recovers faster, does not care whether the coach is level, and is far less bothered by a hot afternoon. The trade is that it needs continuous power, which in practice means an inverter and a battery bank capable of carrying it, or shore power. Coaches converted to residential often develop power problems long before they develop refrigeration problems.

    Knowing which one you have changes the whole conversation. A residential unit that stops cooling overnight while boondocking is very often a battery and inverter issue. An absorption unit doing the same thing on a hot day parked in the sun may be behaving exactly as designed.

    Dometic, Norcold, and the Residential Conversions

    Nearly every absorption refrigerator in a motorhome carries one of two names: Dometic or Norcold. The diagnostic logic above applies to both, because both run the same ammonia absorption cycle, but the control boards, error codes, door parts and cooling units are not interchangeable, and model families within each brand differ again. That is why the model and serial number, usually on a sticker just inside the food compartment, is the first thing worth having on hand when you call: it turns "a Norcold that will not light" into a specific burner assembly and a specific board.

    Norcold in particular has had manufacturer recalls on some models over the years, some of them related to fire risk. This page deliberately lists no campaign numbers or affected model ranges: the reliable way to know is to check your model and serial number against the manufacturer's recall records, and that check is already part of the annual service here. If your refrigerator has an open recall, that is the first thing worth knowing before spending anything on other repairs.

    Coaches converted away from absorption run standard household compressor refrigerators. For those, the brand on the door matters far less than the power system behind it: an inverter and battery bank that cannot carry the compressor through the night will take down the best residential unit made.     How RV Refrigerators Fail

    The symptom you can describe on the phone usually narrows the diagnosis considerably, often before the coach arrives.

    Cold on shore power, warm on gas

    An absorption fridge that cools on electric but not on propane has a gas-side problem, not a cooling-unit problem. The burner orifice blocks with soot or spider webbing, the flue fills with debris, the thermocouple weakens, or the gas valve stops opening reliably. This is one of the more common calls and one of the more straightforward to put right.

    Cold on gas, warm on electric

    The reverse points at the electric heating element or the circuit feeding it. Elements fail open, connections corrode, and on some models the same control board that switches modes is at fault. Because the cooling unit itself is clearly fine, this is usually an affordable repair.

    Will not cool on either mode

    When neither heat source produces cooling, attention moves to the cooling unit itself or to the control board that governs both. Before condemning anything expensive, the basics still matter: is the coach level, is the ambient temperature extreme, is the vent stack blocked, and has the unit been run on its side or stored badly.

    A sharp smell or yellow residue

    Absorption refrigerators run on an ammonia solution under pressure. A leak announces itself with a distinctive sharp odour and often a yellow or greenish powdery residue in the vent area behind the coach. This is the one symptom to stop and call about rather than continue using. A leaking cooling unit is not a repair to attempt, and the fridge should not be run until it has been looked at.

    Freezer works, fridge does not

    On absorption units this often points at airflow inside the cabinet or at a thermistor sitting out of position on the fin. On residential units it is more likely a failed evaporator fan or a defrost fault letting ice block the air path between compartments. Same symptom, entirely different diagnosis depending on which type you have.

    Cycling, error codes, or a dead panel

    Control boards are a genuine wear item on RV refrigerators. Heat, vibration and voltage spikes all take their toll, and a failing board can mimic almost any other fault: no gas ignition, no electric changeover, phantom error codes, or a display that has gone dark while the unit still runs.

    Ammonia Leaks and the Cooling Unit

    The cooling unit is the sealed array of tubing on the back of an absorption refrigerator. It holds ammonia, water and a corrosion inhibitor under pressure, and it is not a serviceable assembly in the way a car radiator is. When it fails, it usually fails by corroding through at a weld or a bend, and once the charge escapes the unit cannot be topped up.

    The warning signs are consistent. A sharp, acrid smell around the outside vent or inside the cabinet. A yellow or greenish crystalline residue on the tubing or on the floor of the vent recess. Sometimes a distinct gurgling followed by the unit simply never getting cold again. If you notice any of that, stop running the fridge on either mode and open the coach up to ventilate it.

    The realistic options at that point are a replacement cooling unit fitted to the existing cabinet, or a complete replacement refrigerator, and increasingly a conversion to a residential unit if the coach's power system can support it. Which of those makes sense depends on the age of the cabinet, the availability of a cooling unit for that model, and whether the coach already has the inverter capacity for a residential swap.

    One thing worth checking regardless of symptoms: RV refrigerators have been subject to manufacturer recalls over the years, some of them related to fire risk. Having the model and serial number checked against outstanding recalls costs nothing and is part of a thorough annual service.

    Gas, Electric, and Why Desert Heat Matters

    Most absorption refrigerators can run on propane or on 120 volt electric, and many switch automatically depending on what is available. That automatic changeover is handled by the control board, which is why a board fault so often presents as a fridge that will only work in one mode. Testing both modes separately is the fastest way to split a gas-side problem from an electric-side problem from a cooling unit problem.

    On the gas side, the burner assembly is the part that needs attention most often. The orifice is a very small hole, and it does not take much soot, rust scale from the flue, or a spider nest to disrupt the flame. A weak or yellow flame will not drive the cycle properly even though the fridge appears to be lit and running. That is why cleaning the burner, flue, orifice and baffle is core to the annual service rather than an optional extra.

    Ambient temperature is the other factor, and in southern Nevada it is a large one. An absorption fridge rejects heat through the coils behind the outside vent. When the air arriving at those coils is already extremely hot, and the coach is sitting in full sun with the fridge wall facing west, the unit simply cannot shed heat fast enough. Adding a vent fan, shading that side of the coach, and keeping the vent stack clear of debris all make a measurable difference before any repair is needed.

    Level matters too. Absorption cooling relies on liquid flowing by gravity through the tubing. Parked significantly off level for an extended period, the solution pools, circulation stalls, and in the worst cases the unit overheats internally and is permanently damaged. Short periods of travel are not a problem, because motion keeps the solution moving. Sitting on a slope for a weekend is.

    Because the gas side of an absorption fridge shares a supply with the rest of the coach, a fridge that will not light is sometimes a symptom rather than the fault.
